4 inch and 6 inch "split" crosses hand forged out of carbon steel by our kid.
The kid is old enough now to take part in family finances. So we challenged him to find a way to earn half the expense of an out-of-state Taekwondo competition. And he rose to the challenge!
After penciling out several ideas, he settled on forging these split crosses. He's able to do most of the work with minimal help from us and has been conscientious about working on his consistency and craftsmanship. (See the bottom of the page for the history of this design.)
It's been a good lesson all around: goal setting, research, discipline and sweat. These things are good for Taekwondo as well as every day life.
All profits from the sale of these crosses go directly into the kid's Taekwondo competition fund.
*** All crosses are made to order. It MAY take a week before yours is ready. Please be assured we will send it as soon as it cools down enough to ship. ***

The split cross (also called the Friedrich's cross) design is at least 600 years old. The technique was lost for centuries until it was re-discovered during an archeological dig in the 1970's.
The story is that in the 70's an American, Christoph Friedrich, took part in an archeological dig on an ancient smithy site in England. He found the cross buried and forgotten under centuries of dirt and soot. Friedrich took the cross home and cleaned it up. He spent some time figuring out how the cross could have been made using only one piece of steel. Now every blacksmith teaches the split cross technique to anyone who is interested in smithing so that the knowledge does not disappear again. In addition to the cross being a deeply meaningful symbol, the importance of history and craftsmanship is also part of Friedrich's cross. |
